Amidst the dark clouds of the pandemic, a piece of good news arrives for Surat as a ray of hope. Yes! That’s right. Our beloved city Surat has managed to secure the second rank in the Swachha Survekshan 2020. This was a remarkable day for the SMC & the citizens alike. All of our hard work and efforts in planning & executing a clean & efficient garbage management system has paid off. SMC has taken some landmark steps in the waste management sector in the past few years & people of Surat have welcomed these changes with open arms. The first important decision was taken exactly two years back when Surat was declared a “Container Free” city. All the huge garbage collection containers were removed and replaced with small and efficient segregated waste collection boxes. After making Surat Container-free, SMC took a giant step and provided every household with Green & Blue dustbins to segregate their waste. This campaign was promoted heavily and in just a year, waste segregation became every Surati household’s daily habit. To make sure that the segregated garbage is taken to the garbage processing plants separately, every door to door garbage collection vehicle was provided with two different storage/transportation units to store wet & dry waste separately while transporting. A year ago, another historical step was taken by the SMC when the usage of all the plastic products under 50 microns & later on every single-use plastic product’s use was prohibited & fined by the city’s law. These colossal decisions gave Surat a flight it needed to rise up in the Cleanest City rankings. Along with securing the titles of the 2nd Cleanest City of India, Surat has also earned the prestigious title of being one of the five “Five Starred Garbage free city of India”. The hard work & dedication of our night cleaning staff, Swachhata-karmis, and last but not the least our beloved citizens can never be undermined. Though Surat’s flight from 14th to 2nd Rank in Swachha Survekshan is impressive, we all should pursue a higher goal & try to make Surat India’s undisputed #1 cleanest city in Swachha Survekshan 2021.
