Surat soars its way to the top of the smart city rankings. Respected PM Shree Narendra Modi had announced the “Smart City” plan on the 25th of June 2015 to promote cities that provide core infrastructure, a clean and sustainable environment and give a decent quality of life to their citizens through the application of ‘smart solutions’. Thus, under the Smart Cities Mission 100 cities were selected from all over India. In the first round Surat was selected by positioning itself among our country's top 20 smart cities.

The rankings are declared by the Government of India’s Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs. The ministry ranks 100 cities in India through ranking system based on fulfillment of key standards such as successful completion of the undertaken projects & certification of the applied grants along with other important criteria’s.

SMC & Surat Smart City Development Ltd. has initiated a total no of 82 projects in the city of approx. ₹3000 Crores. • Out of that, 66 projects worth ₹1717 Crores have already been completed, • 14 projects worth ₹1205 Crores are under completion, • 2 projects of ₹80 Crores are awaiting approval after the scrutiny

These numbers assured Surat’s top spot in the Smart City Rankings. Rewarding the high merits of the city in different criteria’s decided by ISAC 2021 committee, Surat was awarded the title of the smartest city of India in Indian smart city awards ISAC 2020.

To showcase Surat’s incredible achievement in the Smart City Rankings, national news channel DD News had invited SMC Commissioner Shri Banchhanidhi Pani, Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary of India Shree Durga Shanker Mishra along with Principal Secretary of Orissa Shri G. Mathi Vathanan, in an episode aired on the 21/6/2021 in their #InFocus program which was titled “Smart Cities Mission Project & its relevance in sustainable urban development”.
